Description
This third volume has a new collection of letters from the front, telling us what it was really like to be a soldier in the Boer War, the hardships, the weather, the fierce battles and sad losses. There is the story of the rail crash at Machavie in which the 8th contingent lost fifteen men, a story told mainly by the troopers in their letters home. A soldier court-martialled was released by the King's intervention. There were more muddles and errors at the Defence Department.
This volume began with a few stories that exceeded the planned length of the second volume. More stories in great variety continued to emerge.
