On 8 November 1809 the brig Boyd sailed from Sydney Cove for Capetown and London by way of Cape Horn. Stopping in New Zealand to take on kauri spars in Whangaroa Harbour, the ship was burned to the waterline, and those aboard massacred by local Maori. Almost precisely a hundred years later, in 1908, the New Zealand artist Walter Wright first exhibited his painting of the scene of this tragedy.
