In 1831, English novelist Susanna Moodie wrote friends that she would `never marry a soldier nor leave my country for ever.' The following year, as the wife of a half-pay officer, she set sail from Scotland for her new home in Upper Canada. The couple was convinced that a life of farming in the New World would provide the income to live a comfortable life and maintain their social status.
