In 1750 Wolverhampton had hardly changed for centuries. It was a place of health and prosperity - for some; there was no local paper, and industry had yet to make an impact. The 19th century brought a population explosion, industrial expansion and a host of problems along with a crescendo of new building. New roads spread their tentacles, the wealthy moved away from the centre, and the Corporation became more and more involved in the town's development. The bicycle and car industries grew apace. Trade unionism began to influence public affairs. Much time, thought and money was expended on provision for the sick and poor - and on keeping the poor in their place. Hospitals, schools, churches, library and public halls proliferated, and police and fire services were formed...
