In the course of his travelogue, Marjoribanks graphically describes the Boyd and Wairau massacres, and Maori cannibalism, specifying dislike of pakeha steaks and giving the recipe for the ideal `dish.' Hocken described it thus: a `chatty book, giving amusing glimpses of everyday life.' Marjoribanks, a Scottish settler and entertaining writer, arrived in New Zealand in the Bengal Merchant in 1840. The first edition of his `Travels' was published in 1847.
