The decisive battles of WW2 occurred in 1944. As the year began, US troops were poised in England for the invasion of Europe. In the Pacific, ships, planes and men were cutting away at the outer island defences of Japan. Because the war overshadowed all other events of the year, news about it crops up throughout this volume. Meanwhile on the homefront a nonsense song called Mairzy Doats was sweeping the country; and President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to an unprecedented fourth term.
