Chris MacLean's book is largely based around the activities of the Tararua Tramping Club, but it is also a comprehensive history of the Park, its early exploitation, resisting continued attempts to utilisise its natural resources as well as the battle to maintain the territory in its natural condition while managing the stress created by a still increasing popularity with a keen tramping community.
