This is a strange illustrated story of the last man hanged in New Zealand. Walter James Bolton was a sheep farm manager in Wanganui and had been married to his wife Beatrice for 43 years. When she fell ill and died, poison was suspected. Bolton was on trail for 9 days. References to his sexuality and his affair with Florence Doughty spread through the newspapers. He was charged with extracting arsenic from sheep dip and poisoning his wife. When he was found guilty on Decemeber 6th, 1956, he was sentenced to death by hanging. His execution in February 1957 was also riddled with questions.
