After the great victory at Vicksburg there ensued a pause while Grant's army rested and refitted, andin Washington, Halleck and Lincoln debated as to whether Texas or Mobile was to be the next move. This did not mean however, that all was quiet both east and west of the Mississippi. There were raids, sieges, even campaigns during these uneasy summer months, some of which have never before been fully described or understood. This fifth and last volume of Lincoln Finds a General includes the defence of Helena by Prentiss, the capture of Port Hudson by Banks, Sherman's capture of Little Rock, John Schofield's ordeal in the troubled department of Missouri. Then the scene shifts to Rosecrans's HQ at Murfreesboro and returns to January 1863, immediately after the battle of that name. The reader is shown the delays, the continued pressure from Washington, and the skillfl manouevres by which, in June, Rosecrans advanced through the mountain gaps in pursuit of his deterined adversary, a pursuit which ended in disaster for him at the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. The volume ends with Grant in October 1863, about to start to restore the situation on the Cumberland.
