The attractive town of Stratford in the heart of the rich dairying region of Taranaki was carved from dense rain forest in the 1870s. Though its history has some similarity to other rural service centres, Stratford has a number of unique features, including its proximity to the majestic Mt taranaki, streets named from the works of William Shakespeare, its surrounding oil and gas wells, its strategic position as a rail and highway junction as well as the administration base for two local government units.
