The few ships New Zealand had to man in WW2 employed only approximately half of the volunteers available to the Navy. Naval personnel not required for manning home-based ships were drafted overseas to serve in Royal Navy vessels all over the world. Usually as RNZN ratings joined British ships in twos and threes, their movements seldom attracted any mention in their home newspapers, compared with the publicity given to those in service on the home station. Altogether five New Zealanders served on the author's ship, HMS Aurora. This story is intended to be an amalgam of their service, covering the period from 1941 to 1945...
