When Peter Taylor decided to retire from the sea and settle down to married life, he did not make a very drastic move. Joining the lighthouse service, he was posted in 1958 to Moko Hinau, a rugged island jutting from deep water off the east coast of North Auckland. Here he and his wife Marita were introduced to the joys and frustrations, the occasional dangers and compensating pleasures, of life in round rooms far away from the crowds.
