From the earliest days of motoring in New Zealand, Kiwis have had a love affair with their cars. For over 90 years the relationship has remained intense, emotional and irrational. By 1936 New Zealand was second only to America with respect to the number of cars per head of population. We bought them because we loved to drive, to be seen driving, to go places, to tell lies, argue about the relative merits of each marque and to pull cars to pieces so we could rebuild them.

This book is a tribute not only to the enthusiast who knows cars and how to restore them, but also to the ordinary bloke who sees a rusted-out hulk under a macrocarpa tree and dreams.
