John Simpson, the BBC's Foreign Affairs Editor, was the first European journalist allowed into Baghdad after the invasion of Kuwait in August 1990. He brought the first reports of the Gulf War to Britain's television screens and witnessed the bombing of the Iraqi capital, subsequently being arrested, escaping and then being removed from the city.
