In 1968 Cambodia was a relatively peaceful and prosperous country. Nixon was elected as U.S. president, and Henry Kissinger became his National Security Assistant. Ten years later Nixon was disgraced, Kissinger celebreated, and Cambodia, generally referred to as a 'sideshow' to the Vietnam war, had been almost obliterated, with hundreds of thousands dead in the Khmer Rouge killing fields.
