Penguin Planet - Their World, Our World
Penguins are among the most endearing of creatures, and yet we know so little about them. Many people are surprised to learn that there are so many penguin species in the world - 17, in fact. They also vary noticeably in size, from the well-named little penguin - standing only 18 inches high and weighing just over 2 pounds - to the mighty emperor penguin, more than twice as tall and weighing up to 90 pounds. Penguins vary dramatically in behavious and personality as well. Emperors and kinds seem slow and deliberate while Adelies are hyper-active. Rockhoppers seem particularly prone to argument, while magellanics appear unreasonably fond of their own loud, braying voice. There is also considerable variety in the kinds of place where penguins live - not just in the Antarctic, but throughout the oceans of the Southern Hemisphere. Yet throughout their range, human activity is having an enormous impact on penguins. To help them survive and prosper, we must find ways to protect them and their habitat.
