The first comprehensive account of the land and its people. The Pauatahanui Inlet and its surrounding bush land were important sources of food for Maori prior to Pakeha occupation. The NZ Company's effort to colonise the land caused Maori/Pakeha conflict, delaying Pakeha settlement until the 1850's, when Pahautanui village became the most imprtant settlement and the administrative centre for the whole of the Porirua basin.
