'Farthest West' contains a record of an unusual trip through the rain forests of the West Coast of Otago, from Lake Manapouri to Supper Cove at the head of Dusky Sound. The author was accompanied by his nephew, A W Reed, and gives a day to day account of their experiences in a region that has been traversed by not more than a handful of white people in the course of New Zealand's history.
