I Heard You Singing is the story of two New Zealand singers, Corinne Bridge and Ramon Opie, and their efforts to forge professional careers in a country which generally respects its sports stars far more than anyone in the arts. Ramon received little musical encouragement during his childhood in a South Island orphanage but went on to become New Zealand's 'most exciting tenor' whose voice was considered to be 'world class'. Corinne's early success in concert, broadcasting and opera engagements earned her a Government Bursary for studies overseas, which she completed at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She continued her career in London before being offered a contract by the New Zealand Opera Company to return home. This led to meeting her future husband and from then on their music-making continued together. I Heard You Singing is a 'behind the scenes' account of their working partnership. It has been described as a 'richly detailed picture of New Zealand's musical life during the 1950s to 1980's' (Max Cryer), and as 'having the potential not only as a valuable historical record but as an enjoyable read for many New Zealanders' (Julia Millen). Corinne Bridge-Opie lost much of her will to sing after her husband's death in 1995, but found a new pleasure in writing. Several of her shorter pieces were published, encouraging her to write the story of her life in music with Ramon Opie.
