Lt Polkinghorn was the commanding officer of HMS Peterel, a river gunboat, in Shanghai at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. He refused to surrender and HMS Peterel ship was sunk in the harbour. He and the surviving members of his crew were taken prisoner. His story and that of other British POWs in Shanghai, a few weeks before the first atomic bomb was dropped, is told. Nominal rolls, medical records, details of food, clothing, sports equipment and samples of correspondence are also featured.
