Description

This volume is the first in a two part series, Historic Buildings of New Zealand', published in conjunction with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. It concentrates on the buildings of the North Island, using them to illustrate and tie together many aspects of New Zealand's history. The buildings featured range from richly decorated Maori meeting houses to the modest homes of settlers and missionaries, from early industrial and commercial buildings to the farm buildings and mansions of successful sheep farmers, from the Gothic proportions and elegance of a pro-cathedral to the unpretentious dignity of Maori churches in Northland.

This is the first time a book on New Zealand's early buildings has been presented on this scale. The well researched text is matched by many fine illustrations, giving old and new views of buildings both familiar and little known. Together they combine to give a fresh perspective on the history of the North Island, and to demonstrate the continuing need for preservation of our architectural and cultural heritage.

Over 215 black and white illustrations. Over 110 colour illustrations.
