COMMON BIRDS IN NEW ZEALAND 1 is the first of two volumes on the common or commonly seen birds of New Zealand. By this is meant that they are either prolific in numbers, distributed throughout many parts of the country, or that a visitor to the area in which they are most common will probably see them. In addition to native and endemic species, the numerous introduced birds which have become an integral part of the New Zealand bird fauna are included.
The book is not designed as a comprehensive field guide, but rather for use in practical visual identification. Colour photographs are complemented by a brief summary of information, designed more as an incentive for further interest and study than an exhaustive reference. Scientific language has been kept to a minimum when giving descriptions and, where used, has been explained.
