The Memoirs of Joseph Masters - Founder of Small Farm Settlements for the 'Small Man'
Published by the Wairarapa Archive, Masterton, Wairarapa, 2005, 219 pages.
An exploration of the interesting, often enigmatic, life of Joseph Masters, founder of Masterton and one of the originators of the Small Farms Association that established unique settlements in Greytown and Masterton in 1854 - 150 years ago. The Memoirs of Joseph Masters includes his memoirs, not published before and assembled by him towards the end of his life largely from newspaper articles he sent to the newspaper in Derby, England, where he was born and grew up. The memoirs have been edited, further researched and annotated by descendants to answer questions raised in the text and to provide more detail. The book also includes an essay by Gareth Winter of the Wairarapa Archive which puts his Masterton years and achievements into an historical context. The Memoirs of Joseph Masters also includes a special section commemorating the special 150th year reunion of Masters descendants held in Masterton in May 2004.
