This was the year of the great Stock Market Crash. Among financial experts, there had been intimations of trouble. But for most of the year Americans in general were blissfully unaware of impending disaster; there was much more public concern over a variety of matters: the government was having trouble enforcing prohibition (innocent people were getting shot); the Congress was fretting about more cruisers for the Navy and whether to lower tariffs; Al Capone was going to jail; Charles Lindbergh was courting - and marrying - pretty Anne Morrow; and in baseball, the fabulous Babe Ruth was leading both leagues with a batting average of .404.
