In this, the second book of the series, Miriam Macgregor has compiled the life stories of 40 women of the colonial era. Like their sisters on the East Coast, they cooked in camp ovens, carried water from the creeks and peered anxiously through the gloomy bush as they awaited the return of their men. Many of them experienced the terrors of the Maori Wars. Each did her share to break in the land, clear the bush, to build the pastures, and each in her own way became part of the history of the district.
