Uniforms of the Civil War
The Civil War was characterized by colourful uniforms; apparently neither army thought to provide its soldiers with uniforms that blended in with the terrain. In this comprehensive book Lord points out that the traditional notion that the Southern soldiers wore gray and the North wore blue was not always true. In fact, during the early months of the war, uniforms that sported every colour of the rainbow could be seen. The grades of officers were distinguished by the number of buttons worn on their colourful coats. In addition, throughout the war, there were thousands of units in the Federal and Confederate armies, and many of them had their own distinctive uniforms, which are covered here. There is also a chapter devoted to Prisoners, Bushwackers, Deserters and Veterans. Lord also details Supply Allowance and Issue of Uniforms. There is an extensive Appendix, including names of suppliers and patents issued to both sides. Arthur Wise has supplied over 100 rare photographs and illustrations that depict accurately the uniforms discussed in the text...
