In 1841 Peter Wilson, his wife and one child arrived in NZ from Great Britain and initially settled in Wanganui, later moving to New Plymouth where he was chief surgeon at the hospital. The book is based on his letters and diaries and apart from his medical duties he became involved in community affairs. As a result his record reaveals much about life in general for early settlers, medical matters and of the Land Wars in Taranaki. Lambert's biographical account put on record the work and other acheivements of a previously little-known pioneer.
