Description

In January 1987 the MV GREENPEACE left New Zealand on a voyage to Antarctica. Grenpeace's aims were were to establish a base dedicated to scientific research, and to monitor the activities of countries who consider it politically and economically advantageous to maintain a presence in the world's last wilderness.

ICEBOUND is the first independent account of that voyage. It follows the difficulties, hopes and frustrations of the crew, who negotiated potentially lethal pack ice, constructed a base to house four overwinterers in the harshest environment in the world, and met with a sometimes chilly reception from the New Zealand, American and French authorities.

Antarctica is unique, and relatively pristine. That situation is changing, as human activity looks set to greatly increase. Attempts at prospecting and mining the potentially vast mineral wealth may not be far away. Nations such as New Zealand are having their favoured position as part of an exclusive 'Antarctic club' challenged; and questions are being asked about what right an even more exclusive inner circle of nations, again including New Zealand, have to claim a part of the huge uninhabited continent for themselves.

There is a rapidly growing body of evidence that the Antarctic plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy global environment, and that even low levels of human activity may trigger profound changes. Greenpeace would like to see Antarctica remain an environmental and scientific haven. This book examines the day-to-day realities faced by Greenpeace campaigners in their attempt to translate that desire into fact.
