When 'Being Pakeha' appeared in 1985 it was acclaimed as a seminal book: the first serious anyalysis of what it meant to be a non-Maori New Zealander. This book continues the story.

Published a decade later, that original text has been rethought, rewritten and expanded considerably to include the author's sometimes bruising encounters with Maori and Moriori, his interaction with other New Zealand writers, and his engagement with his own culture of origin, that of Catholic Ireland.
