This is a lively look at what is now central Auckland, but which for many years was Auckland in its entirety, from 1865 to 1910. The first 25 years of Auckland's growth from 1840 to 1865 saw the beginnings of many of its institutions and a few elements of its town plan. However, when central government shifted to Wellington in 1865, Auckland developed architecturally in areas of commerce, banking and insurance, warehousing and manufacturing, basic amenities, entertainment, social institutions, edification and housing for the rich and poor.
