In February 1961 Jim Henderson launched a radio programme called 'Open Country', and for four years it has been bringing the New Zealand countryside and its life right into New Zealand's suburban houses. It's as sweet as gorse-flowers, as pungent as manuka-smoke.

Here are the memories of New Zealanders who write simply and for the fun of it, not for fees and rewards. They look back on the days they remember: the family comedies, the local eccentrics, the taste of butter fresh from the hand-churn. The horses and hot shingle of the deep bush. The hard times of the Depression, and the careless joys of New Zealand childhood . . .

These are real people, writing of what they know and love.

Jim Henderson, who selected the contributions, is a New Zealander who understands his country all the better for having fought with her forces overseas. He knows what it is to live in the concrete deserts that men call cities - he offers here a glimpse of the real Kiwi's rightful heritage: OPEN COUNTRY.
