Silent Witnesses: Photographs from the Amsterdam Police Archives (Still getuigen)
Only a few were aware in 1993 that a fragile treasure had been collecting dust for decades in a side room of the photographic studio at headquarters of the Amsterdam police. Sitting there in hundreds of boxes were a total of six thousand glass negatives with extraordinarily diverse images from the first half of the century: traffic accidents, murders, seized pornography, royal visits, illegal gambling dens and bootleg stills, contraband goods, but also events from the police's own organization, such as sports matches and souvenirs. For five years now, the authors of this book have been carefully studying this fascinating collection. This very special selection of more than 100 photos will enable the reader to take a front row seat to relive those past events which were then completely inaccessible to the general public.
