Charts the turbulent economic and social history of the freezing works industry in Gisborne and the East Coast from the era of the sailing ship to the present. Beginning in 1889, five local freezing works, Taruheru, Kaiti, Tokomaru Bay, Waipoaoa and Hicks Bay flourished and declined, determining the course of the various communities dependent on them. The book also traces the technological changes in the industry. More than 300 illustrations, many not previously published.
