Based on his own experiences, AWOL characterises the eventful and difficult nature of James's life. His father, Jim Edwards, was imprisoned in 1932 accused of being the ringleader of the Auckland riot. After the war James spent many years as a salesman struggling to make ends meet. During that time he also wrote short stories, poetry, and radio scripts.
