Chomolungma - New Zealanders on the North Face of Everest
In August 1985 a fourteen-man New Zealand Alpine Club expedition (which included two Australian climbers) set out from Tibet for the west ridge of Everest (Chomolungma), which has never been climbed. The attempt ended after two life-threatening avalanches, the second of which destroyed camp three and buried two team members.
The team then tried to climb a new route on the north face. They reached 24,000 feet but had to turn back when one climber was badly frost-bitten, another became seriously ill and the top camp was buried by snow. The north ridge was then attempted, but the team was pinned down by impossible winds.
Although the expedition was ultimately unsuccessful, its real triumph was that not one life was lost despite the horrifying conditions.
CHOMOLUNGMA is an exciting account of a major Himalayan expedition and a tribute to the team's climbing skills and courage; it is also a signifigant chapter in the annals of Himalayan climbing.
