Description
The name Gibraltar is a corruption of Gebel Tarik, meaning Tarik's mountain, after the Moorish commander who led the invasion of southern Spain in 711. The Moors were finally expelled from the Rock in 1462 and it remained in Spanish hands until 1704. In that year a British and Dutch force captured it and in 1713 it was ceded to Britain by the Treaty of Utrecht. The Rock was a valuablew military asset for Britain in the Napoleonic Wars and the two world wars, but its retention has cost much loss of Spanish goodwill...
