During the period 1947-1974 the British Government sponsored the emigration of some 77,000 people to New Zealand, mostly skilled tradesmen and trained clerks that Britain badly needed herself, in what has been called the Last Imperial Venture to strengthen the British Empire. The immigrants found their new country familiar, and yet strange, a Lotus Land nobody had counted upon. For when they tried to sail away they found themselves drawn back irresistably to the Land of the Long White Cloud.
