But he must not be supposed to be addressing his shipmates aloud, except for the occasional verses in italics about their doings on deck and below as the vessel nears land. The rest is locked fast inside the cowardly fellow's head, a fanciful going backwards which at times get sadly entangled with all which is actually going forward...
