Mau Mahara - Our Stories in Craft
This lavishly illustrated book has been published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name. It celebrates 150 years of Maori and Pakeha craft in New Zealand. Both the exhibition and book seek to re-invest craft objects with their history and to review them with the traditional Maori attitudes towards objects and their functions. Each piece of work is featured with the events, stories, and memories that it evokes. The book focuses on the variety of stories told around the craft objects, exploring such themes as the handing on of skills and knowledge, reverence of past skills and ways of life, the spirituality invested in the object, its function, and its expression of community meanings and national identity.
