The author was born on St. George's Day, April 23rd, 1915, in Lower Hutt. He was educated at Croydon School and Christ's College. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from teh University of Canterbury, he served as Christchurch City Buildings Engineer 1958 - 1980. He lives in Christchurch with his wife, Bridget Chapman QSM.
