In April 1941, while fighting in the Second World War, New Zealander John Denvir was captured by the German forces in Greece and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp in Yugoslavia. After a daring escape, he had the choice of making his way to the coast, to neutral territory, or of joining a small band of 120 partisan soldiers conducting guerrilla warfare in the mountains of Slovenia. He chose to join the partisans, and continued to serve with them for two years, leading attacks on German and Italian positions. Believed by his family to have been shot and killed, Denvir fought bravely behind enemy lines, surrounded by the Axis forces on all sides, he would eventually be awarded the Soviet medal for valour. This is his remarkable story.
