Frank Buckland's claim to have been the most curious Victorian must rank high. Food for the People was his ambition and he was a pioneer in many fields. As Inspector of Fisheries he did much to promote fishing on sea and land, introducing trout into New Zealand and Australia, and keenly befriending the crab and oyster. He helped also to lay the foundations of modern fishery research.
