Gibbon's Journey from Geneva to Rome

In April 1764 Edward Gibbon set out from Geneva with William Guise whom he had met while staying at Lausanne, and together they travelled slowly through Italy and arrived at Rome in October 1764.
During these travels Gibbon kept a journal in which he commented on the aspects of the countryside and the state of agiculture, the appearance of the towns and cities, their streets, houses, churches, palaces, their architecture and monasteries particularly attracted to him.
