Peter Blake has become a legend in New Zealand sporting history. He is one of only two yachtsman in the world to have sailed in all four Whitbread Round the World races.

With Ceramco New Zealand, in the 1981-82 Whitbread, he captured the hearts and the imagination of a nation as he and his crew overcame tremendous odds to finish the 27,000-mile classic with distinction. No sooner was that race over than Blake began planning for the next, this time in a new yacht, Lion New Zealand. The sea and the elements hadn't changed, but the race had: this time the focus was on big boats designed and built specifically for the race.

The 1985-86 Whitbread was characterised by high-tech yachts manned by sailors who smashed all the records as they pushed themselves and their craft to the limits in the greatest yacht race ever.

LION is the story of that epic adventure, from the early planning stages and the building of the yacht to the dramatic finish in Portsmouth. It is a superbly written account of one of the most exciting challenges of our time and a tribute to the courage and determination of ocean-racing yachtsmen.
