Although born in Christchurch in 1948 Peter Black has spent most of his life in the Wellington area. His works reflect urban influences and according to Des Kelly (in his catalogue introduction) concentrate on manscape rather than landscape, and the additives and disconformities of man's behaviour and labour figure large.

The simplicity of this artist's approach is deceptive. Although he restricts himself to a 35mm camera and a moderately wide angle lense for his work, he still manages to coax maxium viewer participation through each image. Indeed, the image's confrontation with the viewer is an important elemeht of the works themselves.
