The Bickersteth War Diary was begun in August 1914 by Ella Monier-Williams Bickersteth, at the urgings of her son Burgon, with the idea of sharing the news of happenings in Europe with another son who was in Australia at the time. She was to continue it for four and a half years and then resumed her task during the Second World War. The resulting volumes, full of newspaper clippings and letters have been edited by her grandson to present a personal look at the life of a family that provided soldiers and chaplains to the British Army and suffered the loss and heartache that were common to many families of that time...
