The author joined the A.I.F. as a private soldier in 1939, and served for six years in England, North Africa, Greece, Crete, Syria and New Guinea. He was commissioned in 1940, in the 2nd/1st Australian Machine Gun Battalion, and commanded a platoon in the Greek Campaign. He was, for six months, personal assistant to Lieutenent-General Sir Leslie Morshead, and for the last half of the war was a Company Commander of the 2nd/3rd Australian Machine Gun Battalion.
