Another New Zealand poet and critic wrote once concerning James K. Baxter's verse that its liveliest qualities were most apparent when Mr Baxter had in mind a particular audience. The same may be said of these prose essays, most of which were originally prepared as talks to be given to particular audiences when the author was the Robert Burns Fellow at Otago University in 1966 and 1967.
Though frequently anecdotal, they are not desultory; and they express clearly the author's attitudes towards society, art, religion and the poetic vocation itself.
