Our Lewes
Lewes is the county town of East Sussex, steeped in history. It has - among much else - a high street lined with attractive ancient houses, a prominent castle, the county hall, a brewery, a theatre, a railway station and a river, which in recent years has flooded spectacularly, creating havoc for many. A little way from its centre it has the well-heeled Southover area, and the sprawling Landport council estate. Cliffe is a busy shopping area, South Street is a characterful neighbourhood. Perhaps the town is best known for its spectacular Fifth of November bonfire celebrations. Our Lewes gives a lively first-hand impression of living in the town today, with glimpses back to yesterday. People from different areas of Lewes are our guides, talking about its character, celebrating individuals who live there, the organisations that matter to them, community events that they take part in, and buildings they live and work in.
