It was around the shores of the Mediterranean that many of the great civilisations of antiquity developed. The belief in one God which forms the core of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, despite the tensions between them and the divisions within them, they have given shape to the civilisations that have developed in and around the Mediterranean.
